Safety

Although Knoxville's downtown has a relatively low crime rate as compared to other cities of similar size, the CBID wants to ensure that all residents, workers and visitors take proper precautions for their safety and overall well-being.

Crime prevention involves everyone. You can help ensure your personal safety by following these simple hints:

• Keep keys, purses, wallets and other valuable items locked in a drawer or closet while in the office.
• When you are working alone after hours, notify building security.
• Keep emergency numbers posted near every phone.
• Secure expensive personal and company property (e.g. laptop computers, software, portable printers, calculators).
• Be aware of individuals entering your building through controlled access doors when you enter. They may be "tailgating" without a need to be there when you enter or exit.

Parking Safety

• Be sure to park in well-lit and heavily traveled areas.
• Park near an open business or one that will be open when you leave.
• When you approach your car, have your keys ready and check the floor and back seat before you get in.
• Have emergency equipment, first aid kit and flashlight available in your vehicle.
• It is a good idea to keep your original registration at home. Carry a copy with you in your purse or wallet.

Walking and Taking the Bus:

• Be alert. Always be aware of your surroundings.
• Be confident. Walk briskly and, if possible, walk with someone, especially after dark.
• Face oncoming traffic and avoid isolated areas.
• Avoid wearing loose-fitting jewelry and keep valuables secure inside your coat or in a pocket.
• If you're waiting on a bus, always stand with the group.
