Arts & Culture Alliance Presents “uproot” by Keegan Luttrell, Artist-in-Residence

Date: 02/10/2011

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present an exhibition of new works titled “uproot” by Keegan Luttrell, Emporium Center Artist-in-Residence, opening Friday, March 4, at 5:00 PM in the Balcony of the Emporium Center. This solo exhibition catalogs the six months (October 2010 – March 2011) of Luttrell’s residency and includes paintings, sculptures, performance, and installations. “‘uproot’ takes the viewer on a journey to re-experience childhood memories,” says Luttrell. “Comprised mostly of found objects and assemblage, my sculptures confront themes of escapism and fear. The reconstruction of home life and my own personal development into womanhood are illustrated in abstract gestural paintings.”

Keegan Luttrell is a mixed media artist who graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2008 with a BFA in Art History and a Concentration in Photography. Originally from Knoxville, she has lived and worked in Baltimore, New York City, France, and Australia. In the past, she has shown in local Knoxville venues, as well as in Baltimore, Brooklyn, New York, Aix en Provence, and Austin. Luttrell gains her inspiration through her travels, and sites her interest in art as “stemming from an exploration of the past”.

“I have been so grateful for the opportunity to be the Artist in Residence at the Emporium,” says Luttrell. “Establishing a studio practice after art school has been a challenge for me, and the Residency has provided me with the space and time to grow artistically and challenge myself in ways I never thought I could.” For more information on Keegan Luttrell, visit http://www.keeganluttrell.com.

“uproot” will be displayed in the Balcony at the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street, from March 4-25, 2011. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on March 4 from 5:00-9:00 PM with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and wine and featuring music by guitarist Thomas Anderson (http://www.thomasandersonguitar.com). Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM with additional hours on Saturday, March 5, from 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM.
