Bijou Acting Camp
Date: 07/01/2011The Bijou Acting Camp is an opportunity for children ages 9-12 to experience the important life skills that theatre can provide.
Bijou Acting will be divided into two parts:
1. Improvisation Games
2. Play Writing/Performance
The participants will spend each morning being led through a series of improvisation games intended to help the children:
1. Find Their Voices - An important skill in life is learning to speak in front of others. They will be involved in games which teach them how to be heard, how to be silent and how to express what they mean. Standing on stage in front of others will give them the confidence to speak with authority.
2. Control and Express with Their Bodies - Children will learn an appreciation for the health and athleticism that goes along with theatre. They will need to learn how to move with purpose, to be still when needed and to express with their bodies. Only a person with physical discipline can do that well and theatre teaches that discipline.
3. Ignite Their Imaginations - We all need to be creative in some aspect of life. Games which encourage the children to think on their feet will give them the spark needed to take their imagination into other areas of life.
The second half of the day will playwriting and performance. The children will start on Monday with an idea for an original play. The idea will come from the children as a group in which they create the outline for a play based on their own life experience and imaginations. The rest of the afternoons will be spent writing, directing, costuming, and learning parts of this original play. Friday afternoon will culminate in a performance of this play for family and friends.

Important Information:
Please have your children wear comfortable clothes that they can easily lie down, sit and move around in.
Please have your children wear shoes - not sandals - as they will be on a stage and back stage and need the protection.
Please provide a lunch and healthy snacks your children can keep un-refrigerated. Some snacks will be provided for them from our gracious sponsors, but please be aware of their own dietary requirements.
They may go outside for lunch if it is a nice day. They will seek shade, but if you need to provide sunscreen for your child, please do so.
The children may be asked to bring a prop or costume piece from home. Please approve what they bring so you know what to collect at the end of the week. Also - please do not allow them bring anything “valuable” as a prop or costume piece as we can not be fully responsible for it.
Remember to be at the Bijou at 2:30 on Friday for the performance. You are welcome to invite as many family and friends as you would like. The performance usually lasts 20-30 minutes.
