Combatting Graffitti Downtown
Date: 12/03/2009Graffiti is an issue faced by urban areas across the country and Knoxville is no exception. The CBID has been working closely with the Knoxville Police Department to devise strategies for both prevention and enforcement. CBID has also helped fund web cameras at various locations throughout downtown that the KPD will monitor for security reasons and may prove useful in discouraging graffiti.
However, in addition to the surveillance by Knoxville Police Department, there are things you can do to help Knoxville from feeling the negative effects of graffiti.
If you see graffiti on public property (park structures, lamp posts, benches, government buildings, etc.) please call the City of Knoxville’s 311 service immediately. To reach the City’s 311 service, dial 3-1-1 from your phone or call 215-3411. The CBID has worked closely with the 311 operators to let them know how to handle downtown graffiti-related calls.
If you spot graffiti on private property and know the owner, please contact them immediately to ask that they remove it as soon as possible. If you do not know the owner, please contact Michele Hummel at (865) 215-2456 to let her know where you saw the graffiti so she can follow up.
Together we can help ensure that graffiti does not inhibit the growth and momentum of downtown Knoxville.
