Downtown Business DELTA-21 Recognized as DOE HUBZone Small Business Contractor of the Year

Knoxville, TN – The Department of Energy (DOE) has selected Knoxville based Delta-21 Resources, Inc. (Delta-21) as the recipient of the HUBZone Small Business of the Year award for the fiscal year 2011. The award will be presented at the Secretarial Awards Ceremony on June 27th at DOE Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The award is provided by the DOE Office of Economic Impact and Diversity, Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization and the National Nuclear Security Administration. Recognition is made to a small business contractor demonstrating exceptional performance, creative solutions, and extraordinary customer service.

With direct support from the DOE Oak Ridge Operations Office, Delta-21 is a growing example of the success of the HUBZone program and the positive impact one small business can have in a community. Delta-21 relocated its offices from Oak Ridge to the downtown Knoxville, Tennessee Historic Market Square district in 2004 in an effort to support and promote the HUBZone Empowerment Contracting Program. The program’s mission is to encourage private sector investment and employment opportunities in distressed communities by bridging the gap between the more than 46 million Americans living in poverty and Small Business Federal contractors. Through the HUBZone program, Delta-21 was able to bring its Federal contracting experience and technology based jobs to this central business district and the surrounding rural counties.

Delta-21 renovated and occupies a formerly abandoned building on Market Square and since 2004, has seen their economic impact exceed 10 Million dollars in employment and local spending. That impact is expected to grow exponentially as Delta-21 employees continue to attract outside investment while developing new and innovative business opportunities for East Tennessee. Delta-21’s corporate strategy includes commitments to community organizations and programs that serve to raise the standard of life, education, and the technical skill of HUBZone residents.

Delta-21 provides both research and technical support to the federal government and its prime contractors in data management, information technology, engineering sciences, environmental and health sciences, and earth and space sciences. Delta-21 is celebrating its 30th year of service.
