Downtown YMCA Bounces Back after Flood with Open House

The Lindsay Young Downtown YMCA completes renovations after a collapsed ceiling and broken sprinkler pipe floods three stories of the historic building.

The Lindsay Young Downtown YMCA is putting the finishing touches on a five and a half month renovation to restore the historic building after part of the plaster ceiling collapsed, bringing down two water supply lines to the fire sprinkler system on the evening of May 29, 2012. The resulting flood damaged three floors of the 83 year old building. With over four inches of standing water, four separate spaces had to be completely gutted and renovated. Repairs include a brand new state of the art group exercise floor, basketball gym, and a new functional training gym.

The public is invited to an OPEN HOUSE on Thursday, November 15. 10am to 7pm

Erin Merten, Health and Well-Being Director at the Downtown stated, “The damage was devastating, but through a lot of hard work we’ve made the space even better than before. We’ve transformed the third floor where the flood started into a functional training room, the latest rage in fitness (think CrossFit meets playground). Functional training pays homage to the roots of exercise. What better place for a space like this than the Downtown Y, where fitness started in Knoxville. With the bones of two racquetball courts (two story ceilings), there is more than enough room for swinging kettlebells, flipping tires, tossing med balls and hanging from the Infinity Rig.”

The Lindsay Young Downtown YMCA is the oldest operating gym in Knoxville, and one of the oldest YMCAs in the country. This is the facility’s second major renovation in the last 5 years. The Y is located downtown on the corner of Clinch and Henley, sandwiched between the Locust Street Garage and World’s Fair Park.

Public meeting to review concept plans for street improvements to the 400 500 blocks of North Gay St

City of Knoxville officials and consultants with Vaughn & Melton Engineering in partnership with Hedstrom Designs Landscape Architects will present their concept plans and receive comments on the proposed streetscape improvements for the 400 and 500 blocks of North Gay Street. This proposed work would complete streetscape work on North Gay from Depot Avenue to Emory Place as identified by a public process in 2008-2010 for Downtown North. Additionally, this work will complete the streetscape work on the entirety of Gay Street from the historic Gay Street Bridge over the Tennessee River to the street’s northern terminus at Emory Place.

The concept plans call for narrowing the road to maintain a through lane in each direction, repair or replacement of sidewalks as necessary, providing landscaped areas for trees, and maintaining protected on-street parking. These plans are consistent with the work that was done on the 300 & 600 Blocks of North Gay in 2011. It continues the city’s efforts to link the core of Downtown to Downtown North by using complete streets concepts, along with consistent street furniture and landscaping.

The meeting is planned for Wednesday, November 14th, 10:00 am, at Auto Technicians, 523 N. Gay Street.

Gay Street named a Great Street by American Planning Association

Gay Street, with its mix of history, rebirth and pedestrian friendliness, has been named one of 10 Great Streets for 2012 by the American Planning Association.

The APA, an independent, not-for-profit educational organization, designated Gay Street as one of 10 Great Streets for 2012 under the organization’s Great Places in America program, which recognizes exceptional character and promotes the role planning and planners have in adding value to communities.

Because of its preservation and its contributions to Knoxville’s economic base and vibrant arts scene, 10 blocks of Gay Street from the southern end of the Gay Street Bridge to West Jackson Avenue were singled out by APA.

“This recognition of the revitalization of Gay Street is a fabulous honor for Knoxville,” said Mayor Madeline Rogero. “The APA designation acknowledges that Gay Street has become an ideal place for business, residents and visitors.”

The nine other APA 2012 Great Streets are:

Duval Street, Key West, FL
Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO
Main Street, Bozeman, MT
Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY
Fifth Avenue, New York City, NY
Wall Street, Kingston, NY
Shaker Boulevard, Cleveland, Shaker Heights and Beachwood, OH
Grant Street, Pittsburgh, PA
Broad Street, Charleston, SC.
