Your Downtown Knoxville Adventure Guide: A One-Day Itinerary
If you’re ready to spend an adventurous day in Downtown Knoxville, you’re in the right place. We’ve planned a one day itinerary filled with exciting activities, interesting cocktails, and must-try foods.
Start your day with a camera in hand, because you're going mural hopping! You can discover over 30 murals in downtown alleys and along historic buildings walls. We recommend starting at the popular Dolly Parton mural at the north end of Strong Alley. Make your way through the alley to discover mural after mural, and at the end, grab a cup of coffee from Coffee & Chocolate. Then head down to the STORIES mural at the Jackson Ave/Gay Street Stairwell and finish up at #MollyKnox at Boyd's Jig & Reel. Many others will surprise you as explore downtown on foot.
Hopefully discovering street art left you with a healthy appetite. And it's a good thing you finished your mural hopping in The Old City, because that brings us to Curious Dog, an adventure for your taste buds. Embellished in bicycles, guitars and brewery memorabilia, it's a funky counter-service restaurant offering epicurean hot dogs and sandwiches, which they name after cities and celebrities. Adventurous toppings include house-made kimchi, grilled halloumi cheese, and wasabi peas. We recommend Knox Favorites: the "Johnny Knoxville" and the "Boston."
It's time to get on the Tennessee River! Head to Volunteer Landing, part of Knoxville's Urban Wilderness, where you can bike, run, or walk next to the water. You can rent kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, and more at the Knoxville Adventure Collective, located at the Outdoor Knoxville Center. Imagine viewing Neyland Stadium and downtown from the middle of the river!
You’re in for a treat at Kaizen, a small Japanese-style pub featuring tapas-style plates. Izakayas are fun, casual, and communal, and Kaizen incorporates a variety of Asian flavors, including Szechuan and Thai. Fan favorites are the Nashville Man Bun, a steamed bun with fried chicken, Sambal chili paste, and house pickles, Crunchy Red Peanut Noodles, and Grilled Shishito Peppers. Plus, they have adventurous daily specials like pork and kimchi okonomiyaki.
For an adventurous drink, dessert, and unique experience, enjoy a nightcap at Lonesome Dove, a Western bistro owned by celebrity chef Tim Love. Their dinner menu is bold, featuring wild game, but their craft cocktails and desserts are just as adventurous. Order the Ancho chile chocolate cake and the Willie, a cocktail smoked with oak chips.
